Firewire - 'blue screen' crash with peripherals attached
Question
In Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) whenever a peripheral such as a FireWire hard disk drive is attached to a FireConnect controller, Windows 98 SE will not boot up or will cause a blue screen crash in the module "apix.vxd". The FireConnect controller shows up without a conflict, does not share any resources and the board appears to be functional.

Disconnect the peripheral from the FireWire controller to boot into Windows 98 SE. Use the utility "aspichk.exe" to determine the version of the ASPI (Advanced SCSI Programming Interface) layer in Windows 98 SE. If the version is not at version 4.71.2, then it must be updated to the current build level using the file "aspi_471a2.exe" (v.4.71.2). Even if the ASPI version is 4.71 with an earlier build level, then it may need updating. "aspichk.exe" is included in the 4.71.2 download.
